I recommend:
Opening a new chat
Being clear and specific
Treating ChatGPT like a conversation
Starter Prompt (ChatGPT for Small Business SWOT)
Type this into ChatGPT:
“Act as a small business consultant.Create a SWOT analysis for a small (type of your business) business.Keep it simple and practical.”
ChatGPT will organize the response into:
Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunities
Threats
This is not your final answer — it’s your baseline.
Step 2: Refine the SWOT Using Real Small Business Details
Generic SWOTs don’t help small businesses grow. Specific ones do.
This is where ChatGPT for small business strategy becomes valuable.
Refinement Prompt
“Refine this SWOT analysis for a business with the following details:– Size: [solo / micro / small team]– Location: [city or region]– Target customers: [who you serve]– Current challenge: [one real challenge]”
Example Used in the Training
Size: Micro business (owner-operated, occasional part-time help)
Location: Green Bay (residential neighborhood, limited foot traffic)
Target customers: Local residents, families, and young professionals who value fresh, handmade baked goods
Current challenge: Low visibility and inconsistent weekday sales
At this stage, the results stop being generic — and start being useful.
If the output feels uncomfortable, that’s usually because it’s accurate.
Step 3: Turn ChatGPT Insights into a 90-Day Action Plan
This is where most SWOT analyses fail — and where small businesses win when they use ChatGPT correctly.
Action Prompt
“Based on this SWOT analysis, identify the top 3 priorities this business should focus on in the next 90 days.”
Now you’re using ChatGPT for small business decision-making, not just analysis.
You can:
Accept the priorities
Adjust them
Ask follow-up questions
Go deeper on one area
